How Steel Type Influences Gun Safe Price and Performance

  • 2 min read
When is a bargain not such a bargain? In the case of buying a bargain gun safe for your home…it's when it fails to protect your guns and valuables from theft or fire. Using a lesser quality gun safe steel helps decrease manufacturing costs, which makes it an attractive option for manufacturers who mass produce safes overseas. And for some, this means selling more safes at almost too-good-to-be-true prices. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. The best performing gun safes always have better steel, but this could also mean paying a higher price.

Better Quality Steel for a Better Safe

Looks can be deceiving. By just looking at a gun safe online or even at a retailer, you really cannot tell anything about the steel from which it is made. And with most safes, you have to just take the manufacturer’s word about the type of gun safe metal that is used. Not with Liberty Safes!

With a Liberty gun safe, you can be confident about the quality level of the steel we use in our safes. Only American-made steel is used to build our safes in our massive production facility in Payson, Utah. Liberty does not cut corners when it comes to steel. Our safes are fabricated from massive 20,000-pound rolls of thick, high-quality steel. This steel has been pickled and oiled to remove impurities and protect it from corrosion throughout the manufacturing process, which makes the steel even stronger.

The Thicker the Better for Performance

You can expect to pay a higher price for a safe that has thicker gun safe steel. For the best protection from theft, you should always choose a safe that is made with steel that is at least 12-gauge. The thicker the steel, the more difficult it is for thieves to drill into it or attempt to pry it apart.

Thicker steel walls also help keep the contents of the safe protected from fire. But do not automatically assume that all gun safes will provide both theft and fire protection. This is another area where Liberty excels because we also add layers of fireboard protection to our already thick steel walls for an added level of fire protection.

Liberty Safes are Always Worth the Price

One of the best reasons to buy your safe from Liberty is that we have a wide range of gun safes to fit any budget. Whether you buy an entry-level safe like the Centurionor our #1 top-rated Presidential, your safe will only be made with American-made, quality gun safe steel.
